| | More Information | Antidepressant medications are used to treat a variety of conditions, including depression and other mental/mood disorders. These medications can help prevent suicidal thoughts/attempts and provide other benefits. However, studies have shown that a small number of people (especially children/teenages) who take antidepressants for any condition may experience worsening depression, other mental/mood symptoms, or suicidal thoughts/attempts. Therefore, it is very important to talk with a doctor about the risks and benefits of antidepressant medication, even if the treatment is not for a mental condition. Tell your doctor immediatley if you notice worsening depression, unusual behavior changes, (including possible suicidal thoughts/attempts), or other mental/mood changes. Be especially watchful for these symptoms when a new antidepressant is started or when the dose is changed. Top of page

Definately took away dysphoric moods
|
|
Negative aspects of the product (cons):

sometimes I get hyper, can't always sleep, overstimulated
|
|
All and all this has been so good for me. I have social anexity and it takes it away and I get relaxed and stay that way most of the time. I have joyousness and feel light and carefree, which I need to be because I don't enjoy being STUCK in depression (which can go on for weeks, me staying in my room for days at a time) I have been living an almost normal life and make friends when I stay on my Paxil.

I had little to no side efects with this medication. the only problems I had were in general I had to move slowly because if I sat up to fast I got dizzy. When I first started on it, it made me tired so my doctor switched me to taking it at night instead of during the day, that way I could sleep through the side effects of it stabilizing the medication level in my body every night but have the benefits of the leveled out medication during the day. this worked out very well for me.
If I missed a dose or did not take it at the same time every night I experienced an electric shock type pain in my head. once I got into the habit of setting an alarm and taking it on time the shock feeling went away.
I had the electric shock feeling when coming off the medication too dispite I was on the lowest dose possible.
This medication is definately one that needs to have a doctors help in stopping the medication so that the person can be weaned off it little by little. it took me 2 months to come off it at the 10mg level and not experience the electric shock in my head feeling.
One plus to this medication - when I was at the 10 mg level and I needed a higher dosage after being on it for a year but I was unable to handle a higher dosage another medication - welbutrin CR - was added with absolutely no adverse reaction.
I am leaving the recommendation turned on to yes because one persons medication flop can also be another persons miracle drug.

caused uncontrollable shaking, naysea, dizziness, & migraine pain
|
|
Paxil is the brand name for paroxetine. I was only on paxil for a very short try it period of time. Immediately after taking is, I went into uncontrollable shaking. Added to that came nausea, dizziness & horrible migraine pain. These effects were bad enough that I couldn't tolerate them long enough to see if they would go away with time or not.

Sensory overload, dizziness, nausea
|
|
I took Paxil for less than a week - it made me incredibly sensitive to stimulus - normal low household lighting was incredibly bright, the volume of the television or people talking in normal tones was overwhelming, even my skin felt funny against my clothing or upholstery. I was dizzy, nauseous and wanted to hide in a dark hole with nothing touching me. After about 3 days, I began to have a peculiar 'empty-headed' feeling - like I could be watching a dimmed television without 'thinking' about what I was seeing. I work in a casino, and the sensory overload was just too much so I discontinued the drug.

I only took one dose 20mg of Paxil, I had head zaps, numbness, nausea, dizzy, felt disconnected, confused, terrified.
|
|
I took one pill @ 20mg dosage and I though I was going to die, I was sick for 4 days after it, vomiting, dizzy, sweating, shaking, confused, staring into space, swirly vision, electric zapping in my head, my legs and arms/hands would fall asleep at random (the painful kind) my speech was off, 4 day migrain with tunnel vision and pain! it was a big bad horrible rollercoaster apparently due to hypersensitivity to the drug, my brain literally went haywire, i would NEVER recommend this drug, its evil! To top it off the panic only became more severe

Gave me anxiety attacks!
|

Took for depression. I never experienced an anxiety attack UNTIL I started taking this medication.
Did not help me at all. As a matter of fact, I continue to experience high anxiety ever since taking this med. I have noticed, though, that since I began having anxiety attacks, I no longer get migraines. Weird, eh?
Friends that have been on this med have had positive experiences and worked well for them. It just wasn't for me.

This stuff is garbage. I can't believe pdoc's even prescribe this crap to people. I have been on a few med's in my history and this one was the worst, wellbutrin being the second worst. I ended up be nausous, light headed/dizzy, hallucinations, had real bad diarrhea (I was a human espresso machine, brewing up non-stop butt coffee), bad headaches, and just felt hopeless.

I had medical insurance at the time I took it, so I only had to pay a small co-pay, like $20.
The only negative side effect I had was sexual.

Works really well for keeping panic at bay, but tends to enourage more manic episodes in those like me, with bipolar problems. It is probably the best treatment I've had though, since I am being treating for more than one disorder...it helps keep me on an even keel. Headaches are a problem when getting used to it.

I was on this for about 8 years straight and I'm practically amnesic to the little details of those years. I started to feel dependent on it after awhile and when I withdrew off of it, felt like I was in a bubble, losing my mind. It also killed my libido.
On the plus side, i was agoraphobic and homebound and this drug gave me the ability to leave my house again. It also completely ceased my irritable bowel symptoms. For those reasons alone, I would still recommend it to people, even tho the side effects are rampant.

I liked this medication for as long as I could take it. Eventually I had to stop or never be able to lay down and rest. Everytime I almost entered into a deep sleep I had restless legs and then the rest of my body would start into muscle spasms. It was the best me I have ever had for my depression, but it was not the right one for me. I will rate this at a 5 in the aspect it was the best antidepressent I had been on, but i would have to say a 0 in regards for me ever taking it again. Eventually The Muscle Spasam begain in daytime. I was originally diagnosed w/ post-partum depression 5 yrs ago and was put on Paxil. Have since been diagnosed with chronic depression, insomnia, and social phobia. A few different docs have tried to change me along the way, and had me try: Wellbutrin (hated it), Effexor (hated it), Prozac (made me mad), Zoloft (didn't work), Trazadone (he** no!), Xanax (loved it a little too much), and just today put me on 20 mg Elavil along w/ my current 40 mg Paxil. Paxil has always been my fall-back drug; I'm relaxed, patient, somber, social and less emotional when I take it. I'm willing to accept the side effects in exchange for the way I'm able to handle life and am just able to live.

I had a horrible reaction to Paxil. I took one 20mg tablet and within a few hours I started feeling extremely nauseous and shaky. I went to bed and woke up a few hours later feeling much worse. I was nauseous and had severe diarrhea (just bile) for the next 10 hours. I was shaking and confused. I passed out at one point and didn't have the strength to pull myself up off the floor. My vision was blurred and my head was spinning and I couldn't control my shaking. I remember feeling like I was dying and wanted to call 911 but didn't have the strength to reach the phone. I ended up in hospital for dehydration and was in bed feeling nauseous and shaky for 6 days afterwards. Paxil scared me. It was more than a year before I was willing to try another drug for my anxiety. I eventually started taking Celexa and that worked well for me with minimal side effects.

Negative aspects of the product (cons):

mania, agitation, aggressiveness, outbursts of temper, sleeplessness, strange electrical shocks during withdrawal

I'm bipolar with a tendency toward dysphoric mania. I also have GAD, social phobia and get PAs. I took this along with 4mg/day of xanax for a few months several years ago during my pdoc's SSRI phase (we also tried Wellbutrin, which didn't work for me in the long run either). I liked Paxil at first. I felt more comfortable around people and didn't get PAs. But after a few months (I lasted longer on this than on Wellbutrin) I started becoming more and more angry-manic, pissed off all the time and picking fights with everyone. And sleep? Forget it. Also, for about 3 weeks after stopping Paxil I would occasionally get odd "electrical shock" feelings. Beware of SSRIs if your bipolar disorder scews towards mania. It might work well for depressives or social phobics who aren't also manic but my pdoc gets a 1 for prescribing this for a mostly-manic patient!

The docs tried to give it to me again when i went into the hospital, they wouldn't let me go home till i did cuz so i took the 1 pill there and when my husband got me home i refused to let him fill the perscription. I suggest lexapro.

I see this antidepressant has a low rating, but to me it is one of the best there is. Since all SSRIs cause weight gain, that's just the price of not being depressed.

Antidepressant properties are solid. It works well.
I generally only get one side effect from antidepressants: no matter which one it is, if it demonstrates even the smallest possibility of causing sexual side effects then I'm going to be the person who has problems with it.

I would have to recommend this because it did work "for me". The only thing is that I gained way too much weight. I tried going off this med and it was hell. So beware of getting off this med. I could hardley get out of bed weaning myself off this med. I'll never take it again.

Paxil has some side effects but I've found it effective for helping me manage both anxiety and depression. I've come to accept the fact that no pill is going to completely "fix" my anxiety and depression but at least with Paxil I can manage. And manage is good enough. I recently tried life without meds and found the anxiety and depression was too much to tolerate. I tried Wellbutrin at the urging of my doctor but it didn't work for me. Now I'm back on Paxil and life is beginning to be enjoyable again. When I was off Paxil, the depression/anxiety and my desperation for relief was getting really scary. Thankfully, things are returning to normal again after a few weeks back on Paxil. The relief is well worth the price of the side effects.

This did not help my depression, but it did help slightly with my anxiety. I did not continue the treatment because my anxiety id not daily and I mainly wanted it for depression. Side effects were minimal for me. If you suffer from anxiety daily and depression, this might be a good place for you to start.

I took Paxil in 1994 and it essentially ruined my life at the time. Zoloft was like a Godsend after it. I have only now begun to rebuild my life after the damage done by Paxil. It ruined my relationships and I even was forced to drop out of school.
